A cavalry charge that saved the line, Matania, WW1
The German line taken in flank by a mounted charge in the teeth of heavy machine gun fire. Major Evelyn H. W. Williams of the Hussars was awarded the DSO for his action. He led a mounted charge after the infantry line had broken back and took the line in flank in the face of the heaviest machine gun fire. The charge sabred 100 of the enemy and took 100 prisoners although his own troop numbered only 150. His action rallied the infantry who advanced and recovered over 3000 yards.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful and evocative image captures the bravery and determination of the British cavalry during the final stages of World War I. In the chaotic and deadly landscape of the Western Front, the German line appears to be on the verge of overrunning the British infantry, who have been pinned down by withering machine gun fire. Amidst the carnage, Major Evelyn H. W. Williams of the Hussars rallies his 150 horsemen and leads a daring and selfless charge against the enemy flank. Despite facing heavy machine gun fire, the cavalry charge sabers through the ranks of the German soldiers, taking 100 of them out of the fight and capturing another 100 prisoners. The impact of this unexpected attack is palpable, as the infantry, inspired by the cavalry's bravery, are able to advance and recover over 3000 yards of lost ground. Major Williams' actions were recognized with the award of the Distinguished Service Order (DSO), an honor bestowed upon officers for meritorious service in wartime. This image, created by renowned war artist Philip Zec, working under the name Matania for the Illustrated London News, provides a vivid and enduring testament to the courage and resilience of the British forces during the First World War.
