EDITORS COMMENTS
Maria II of Portugal (1819-1853), affectionately known as "Maria da Glória" or "Maria the Glorious," is depicted in this elegant portrait as the regnant Queen of Portugal and the Algarves. Born in Queluz Palace near Lisbon, Maria was the eldest daughter of King Pedro IV of Brazil and his second wife, Maria Leopoldina of Austria. When her father ascended the Portuguese throne in 1826 following the abdication of her uncle, King João VI, Maria was just 7 years old. However, due to her father's frequent absences in Brazil, she effectively ruled Portugal as regent from 1826 to 1828. Her reign was marked by the liberal Constitutional Charter of 1826, which established a constitutional monarchy. In 1828, Pedro IV abdicated in favor of his daughter, making Maria the first queen regnant of Portugal. Her reign was, however, short-lived as she was forced to abdicate in 1834 due to political instability and the influence of conservative forces. She went into exile in England, where she lived for the next ten years. In 1842, Maria returned to Portugal following the liberal revolution known as the "Miguelist War," which overthrew the conservative regime of King Miguel I. Maria was reinstated as queen, and her reign was marked by a period of stability and prosperity. She was known for her intelligence, grace, and her commitment to the welfare of her people. Maria II died on December 15, 1853, at the age of 34, leaving behind a legacy as one of Portugal's most beloved and effective monarchs. This portrait, taken during her second reign, captures the regal beauty and poise of this remarkable woman, who played a pivotal role in shaping Portugal's modern history.
