Siege of Delhi, Indian Mutiny, September 1857
Siege of Delhi, Indian Mutiny, September 1857. Colonel Campbells troops storming the Cashmere Gate after engineers had blown it up. The Indian Mutiny was an uprising against British rule in India which began in 1857. The mutiny had many underlying causes, but was sparked by the introduction of cartridges which were greased with animal fat. This outraged both Muslim and Hindu soldiers (sepoys), who made up the majority of the Indian army at the time. Although the mutiny was defeated in 1859, it led to the administration of India passing from the East India Company to the Crown. The capture of Delhi from the mutineers was vital to the British due to the citys symbolic importance as the seat of Indias Mughal rulers. From the Illustrated London News, 1857

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in history - the Siege of Delhi during the Indian Mutiny in September 1857. Colonel Campbell's troops can be seen storming through the ruins of Cashmere Gate, which had been blown up by engineers. The Indian Mutiny was an uprising against British rule in India, triggered by the introduction of cartridges greased with animal fat, which deeply offended both Muslim and Hindu soldiers. The defeat of this mutiny led to significant changes as administration of India passed from the East India Company to the Crown. Capturing Delhi from the mutineers held immense importance for the British due to its symbolic significance as the seat of India's Mughal rulers. In this monochrome image, we witness brave soldiers clad in military uniforms engaging in fierce combat with bayonets fixed on their weapons. The casualties and wounded soldiers scattered throughout serve as a poignant reminder of the brutal realities faced during warfare. This photograph not only provides us with a glimpse into a historical event but also highlights themes such as imperialism, rebellion, and national identity. It serves as a testament to both sides' determination and sacrifice during this tumultuous period in Indian history. As we reflect upon this image captured by an unknown creator for "Heritage Images" it reminds us that even amidst chaos and conflict, there is always room for change and progress.
