Manoeuvring unit for Russian space suit
SMK manoeuvring back pack. Also known as the UMK, it was introduced in 1990 to allow a cosmonaut to fly around the outside of the Mir space station during extravehicular activity (EVA) in orbit. The unit fits over the normal Orlan space suit and has propellant to allow powered movement. Although it remained tethered to the outside of the space station for safety, it did allow access to areas not reachable by normal EVA procedures. Cosmonauts preferred using the stations crane system instead

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Manoeuvring unit for Russian space suit, also known as the SMK manoeuvring backpack or UMK. Developed in 1990, this groundbreaking technology allowed cosmonauts to navigate and fly around the exterior of the Mir space station during extravehicular activities (EVA) while in orbit. Designed as an accessory to be worn over the standard Orlan spacesuit, this powered unit revolutionized manned space exploration by providing controlled motion capabilities through its propellant system. Although safety precautions required it to remain tethered to the station, it granted access to previously unreachable areas beyond traditional EVA procedures. Cosmonauts marveled at this addition to their equipment, appreciating its experimental nature and technological advancements. However, they often preferred utilizing the station's crane system for movement instead. This photograph captures a pivotal moment in 20th-century Russian space history when innovative jet pack-like technology was introduced into manned missions. The image conveys a sense of awe and wonderment surrounding human achievements in outer space. The SMK manoeuvring backpack represents a testament to Russian ingenuity and determination in pushing boundaries within their space program. It symbolizes both progress and ambition as mankind continues its quest for further understanding of our universe beyond Earth's atmosphere.
