EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness the thrilling moment when 24-year-old Rhodesian racer, Gary Hocking, emerged victorious in his first senior T. T. race on the Isle of Man. With sheer determination etched on his face, Hocking fearlessly pushes his M. V. Augusta 500 c. c. four-cylinder machine to its limits along the treacherous mountain course. Breaking records seemed second nature to Hocking as he achieved a mind-boggling speed of 103.51 mph for the grueling 226.4-mile race distance. Not stopping there, he shattered John Surtees' previous lap record set in 1960 with an astonishing speed of 105.75 mph. Hailing from Bulawayo and already recognized as Rhodesia's "Federal Sportsman Of The Year". Hocking showcases his exceptional skill and unwavering passion for racing as he expertly maneuvers through a right-hand corner approaching Governors Bridge during the intense competition. While Hocking claimed victory at this historic event, it is worth noting that E. Boyce on a Norton 499 c. c. , closely followed by F. Stevens riding another Norton with the same engine capacity, secured second and third place respectively. This remarkable image captures not only an extraordinary sporting achievement but also highlights Gary Hocking's incredible journey from Africa to become one of motorcycling's rising stars of that era—a true testament to courage and triumph against all odds.
