Silencing The Trumpet (after Aesop. ), 1870. Artist: Joseph Swain
Silencing The Trumpet (after Aesop.), 1870. Mr Gladstone, the Liberal Prime Minister, is depicted in the uniform of the chief constable in this cartoon. With the raging Irish dissenters in the background, Gladstone has a firm grip on a Fenian supporter who has been promoting newspaper stories designed to incite violence amongst the masses. This cartoon relates to the recently introduced Coercion Bill. Entitled The Peace Preservation (Ireland) Bill, one of its clauses related particularly to newspapers that were deemed to encourage or propagate violence and sedition. The message is that the word is, in its place, at least as mighty as the sword. From Punch, or the London Charivari, April 9, 1870

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Silencing The Trumpet (after Aesop. ), 1870" we are transported back to a tumultuous period in British history. Renowned artist Joseph Swain masterfully captures the essence of political strife and the power struggle between law and rebellion. The focal point of the image is Mr Gladstone, the Liberal Prime Minister, depicted in an unexpected role - that of a chief constable. Dressed in his uniform, he firmly holds onto a Fenian supporter who has been using newspapers to incite violence among the masses. Behind them, Irish dissenters rage on, symbolizing the ongoing conflict. This thought-provoking cartoon directly relates to the Coercion Bill recently introduced at that time. Known as The Peace Preservation (Ireland) Bill, it aimed to suppress newspapers that encouraged violence and sedition. Through this artwork, Swain conveys a powerful message: words hold immense power when used responsibly. The intricate details within the image showcase Swain's artistic brilliance. From Gladstone's determined expression to the smoke billowing around him and even down to every fold in their clothing - it all adds depth and intensity to this scene from history. "Silencing The Trumpet" serves as both a historical document and social commentary on politics during 19th-century Britain. It reminds us of how influential media can be while highlighting Gladstone's firm stance against those who sought chaos through propaganda. As we gaze upon this monochrome masterpiece by Joseph Swain, we are reminded that sometimes silencing one voice can bring about peace for many others.
