EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to around 1900, capturing the essence of a bygone era in Helston, Cornwall. The focal point of the image is the iconic "Fairy" horse bus, proudly parked on Coinagehall Street. This charming vehicle was an integral part of daily life for locals and visitors alike. The photograph showcases a diverse group of passengers eagerly awaiting their journey. Men, women, and children can be seen patiently seated inside the bus or standing nearby. Their expressions reflect a mix of excitement and anticipation as they prepare to embark on their adventure through the picturesque streets of Helston. Thomas John Pascoe stands out amongst the crowd as he confidently occupies his seat on the top far right corner of the bus. Born at Trewennack in 1872 and passing away there in 1943, Thomas's presence adds a personal touch to this historical snapshot. Behind them looms the grand Angel Hotel with its distinctive windows and imposing gate. It served as both a starting point for these horse-drawn excursions and a hub for social gatherings within the community. Surrounded by lush greenery, including an elegant tree framing one side of this scene, it is evident that nature played an essential role in shaping everyday life during this period. Preserved as part of A. K Hamilton Jenkin's collection at Royal Cornwall Museum, this photograph offers us a glimpse into Helston's past while reminding us how transportation has evolved over time.
