EDITORS COMMENTS
In this aerial photograph from 1920, Ramsgate Harbour Railway Station in Kent, England, takes center stage. The station, built in 1863, was the terminus of the Faversham-Ramsgate line and was initially designed for four platforms, all sheltered by a grand, arched roof. The image offers a unique perspective, as we gaze down upon the coastal railway station from above. The station's distinctive architecture stands out against the backdrop of the harbor and the vast expanse of the English Channel. The intricate details of the station's roof, with its curved lines and elegant supports, are particularly noteworthy. Sadly, the railway line and this beautiful station fell into disuse in 1926. However, the station found new life as it was repurposed to house the popular "Pleasurama" funfair. Despite its new role, the station's historic charm continued to draw visitors and remain a beloved part of Ramsgate's coastal landscape. Tragically, in 2005, the station was damaged by a devastating fire. The image captured by Aerofilms in 1920, however, serves as a poignant reminder of the station's rich history and architectural significance. This photograph, part of the extensive Aerofilms Collection held by Historic England, offers a glimpse into the past and a testament to the enduring allure of Ramsgate Harbour Railway Station.
