This image taken 22 August, 1999 by NASAs Landsat 7 satellite and obtained 19 May, 2000 from NASAs Earth Observatory Internet site shows Mt. St. Helens as it looks 20 years after the eruption of the catastophic volcano. The height of Mt. St, Helens was reduced from a height of 9677 feet (2950 meters) to about 8364 Ft (2550 meters) in the eruption on the morning of 18 May, 1980 that sent a column of dust and ash more than 25 km (15.5 miles) into the atmosphere and shock waves from the blast that knocked down trees within 10 km of the central crater.
