The Western Desert Air Transport Service has carried out valuable work in the North
The Western Desert Air Transport Service has carried out valuable work in the North African campaign. They facilitated every stage of the advance, bringing up a constant stream of troops and vital supplies. The Air Transport Service uses several types of aircraft from Bombays and medium transports, such as Hudsons, to the giant D.C.3s. Pilots and crews of these transport aircraft are briefed like bomber crews, and they operate to a carefully prepared schedule. Their work takes them to within a few miles of the enemys positions. Aircraft which have flown fresh troops forward often return with the wounded, and some of the planes are specially fitted to take stretcher- cases. It is a distinctly hazardous business, but the Air Transport always fulfils its unofficial motto " We deliver the Goods!".

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history, showcasing the commendable efforts of the Western Desert Air Transport Service during the North African campaign. In this May 1943 snapshot, we witness troops eagerly boarding various aircraft as they are transported to the forward areas. The Western Desert Air Transport Service played a crucial role in facilitating every stage of the advance, ensuring that troops and vital supplies were constantly brought up to support the ongoing operations. From Bombays and Hudsons to giant D. C. 3s, their fleet consisted of diverse aircraft types tailored for different purposes. Pilots and crews operating these transport planes underwent meticulous briefings similar to bomber crews, adhering strictly to carefully prepared schedules even when flying perilously close to enemy positions. The hazardous nature of their work is evident as some planes were specially equipped with stretcher-cases for returning wounded soldiers. Despite facing immense risks, the Western Desert Air Transport Service lived up to its unofficial motto: "We deliver the Goods!". Their unwavering dedication ensured that troops received timely reinforcements while wounded soldiers were safely evacuated from hostile territories. This remarkable photograph serves as a poignant reminder of those brave men who selflessly served their countries during World War II's North African campaign. It stands as a testament not only to their courage but also highlights how air transportation played an indispensable role in shaping military strategies on distant battlefields.
