Francoise d'Aubigne, Marquise de Maintenon: A Regal Figure in 17th Century French Court This exquisitely hand-colored lithograph captures the enigmatic figure of Francoise d'Aubigne, Marquise de Maintenon, the second wife of King Louis XIV of France. The portrait, based on an original painting by Bonnard, was published in the esteemed collection "Costumes Historiques de la France" by Le Bibliophile Jacob, also known as Paul Lacroix, in 1852. Born in 1634 as Francoise d'Aubigne, the Marquise was a woman of humble beginnings, who rose to become one of the most influential figures at the French court. She married Louis XIV in 1660, when he was already an established monarch, and became the king's official consort and the queen of his heart. The Marquise is depicted here in the grandeur of her regal role, wearing a sumptuous gown of deep purple velvet, adorned with intricate gold embroidery and lace. Her headdress, a towering structure of pearls, diamonds, and feathers, reflects the opulence of the French court. Her expression is serene, yet her piercing gaze suggests a woman of strong will and determination. The Marquise de Maintenon played a significant role in the education of the king's children and was instrumental in the establishment of the Royal Hospice of the Grand-Jesuit, a charitable institution that provided care for the elderly and the poor. Her influence extended beyond the court, making her a powerful figure in French society. This image offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who defied the conventions of her time and left an indelible mark on French history.
