EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking 19th-century lithograph, we find a portrait of Francis, Duke of Anjou and Alencon, also known as François de France, Duc d'Alençon and Duc d'Anjou et de Brabant. Born in 1555, he was the son of King Henri III of France and Catherine de Medici. Francis is depicted in grand attire, wearing a richly decorated doublet, hose, and a fur-trimmed cloak. The intricate design on his doublet, featuring gold and silver thread embroidery, reflects the opulence of the French court during the late Renaissance period. His collar is adorned with the Order of the Holy Spirit, a prestigious and ancient order of chivalry. Francis's expression is serious, yet his piercing gaze conveys a sense of determination and strength. His posture is confident, with one hand resting on the hilt of his sword, signaling his readiness for battle. The background is simple, with a plain, dark backdrop that allows the Duke's regal attire and striking features to take center stage. This portrait, created by Dunand and lithographed by Breton, was originally part of the "Costumes Historiques de la France" collection by Paul Lacroix. The meticulously hand-colored image showcases the exquisite detail and craftsmanship of the time. The Duke of Anjou and Alencon's portrait stands as a testament to the grandeur and sophistication of the French court during the late Renaissance era.
