EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Christian Leinberger in 1771, showcases an intriguing underwater scene from the Wunderkammer or Cabinet of Curiosities owned by P.L. Muller. The illustration, titled "Flying Fish, Suckerfish, Barramundi, Scale, Seahorse," offers a glimpse into the diverse and wondrous world of marine life during the Enlightenment era. At the center of the image, a Flying Fish (Exocoetus volitans) gracefully leaps out of the water, its large wings spread wide to reduce drag and enable longer glides. The fish's agility and ability to fly above the water's surface was a marvel that fascinated naturalists and collectors alike. Two Suckerfish (Remora remora) cling to the bodies of larger fish, such as the Barramundi (Lates calcarifer), depicted on the right side of the engraving. These small, disc-shaped fish use their suction cups to attach themselves to larger species, hitching a ride and feeding on their hosts' leftovers. A single scale is also featured in the illustration, emphasizing the intricacy and beauty of the fish's armor. In the upper left corner, a Seahorse (Hippocampus species) is delicately rendered, its prehensile tail curled around a piece of seaweed. This exquisite zoological illustration, taken from Georg Wolfgang Knorr's Deliciae Naturae Selectae, showcases the meticulous attention to detail and artistic skill of the time, offering a glimpse into the natural world's wonders and the fascination they held for collectors and scholars.
