Leclanche wet cell, an early storage battery, 1887

Leclanche wet cell, an early storage battery, 1887. Invented by the French engineer Georges Leclanche (1839-1882), this was an early form of the zinc carbon (dry cell) battery, the first widely used storage battery. It consisted of a glass vessel containing a zinc rod (left), and a central porous cell of a carbon block surrounded by small pieces of carbon and manganese dioxide and sealed with pitch. The conducting fluid or electrolyte is a strong solution of chloride of ammonia. They were used as a power source in early telephones. From Natural Philosophy by A Ganot. (London, 1887)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Leclanche wet cell, a groundbreaking storage battery invented by French engineer Georges Leclanche in 1887. This early form of the zinc carbon (dry cell) battery marked a significant milestone in the world of technology and electricity. The image depicts a glass vessel containing a zinc rod on the left side, while at its center lies a porous cell made of carbon block surrounded by small pieces of carbon and manganese dioxide. Sealed with pitch, this innovative design was filled with a conducting fluid or electrolyte consisting of a strong solution of chloride of ammonia. Originally used as power sources for early telephones, these batteries played an instrumental role in powering various devices during the 19th century. The engraving beautifully captures the intricate details and craftsmanship involved in creating such an important invention. With its monochrome aesthetic and black-and-white composition, this print exudes an air of nostalgia that transports us back to an era where scientific advancements were shaping our modern world. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and highlights how pioneers like Georges Leclanche paved the way for future breakthroughs in physics, chemistry, and energy. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from A Ganot's Natural Philosophy collection, we are reminded not only of Leclanche's contribution but also how innovation continues to drive progress even today.
