Leclanche wet cell, an early storage battery, 20th century
Leclanche wet cell, an early storage battery, 20th century. Invented by the French engineer Georges Leclanche (1839-1882), this was an early form of the zinc carbon (dry cell) battery, the first widely used storage battery. It consists of a glass vessel containing a zinc rod (left), and a central porous cell of a carbon block surrounded by small pieces of carbon and manganese dioxide and sealed with pitch. The conducting fluid or electrolyte is a strong solution of chloride of ammonia. They were used as a power source in early telephones

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Leclanche wet cell, an early storage battery that revolutionized the world of electricity in the 20th century. Invented by the brilliant French engineer Georges Leclanche, this remarkable creation paved the way for future advancements in technology. The image captures a glass vessel containing a zinc rod on the left side, while at its center lies a porous carbon block surrounded by small pieces of carbon and manganese dioxide, all sealed with pitch. The conducting fluid or electrolyte is depicted as a strong solution of chloride of ammonia. This intricate design allowed for efficient energy storage and transmission. Leclanche's invention played a vital role in powering early telephones, serving as an indispensable power source during those times. Its significance cannot be overstated when considering its impact on concepts such as innovation, science, and physics. As we gaze upon this monochrome engraving from Oxford Science Archive, we are transported back to an era where pioneering minds like Georges Leclanche pushed boundaries to unlock new possibilities. This print serves as a testament to human ingenuity and reminds us of how far we have come in harnessing energy through batteries. Let this image serve as inspiration for future generations to continue exploring new frontiers in chemistry and engineering – just like Georges Leclanche did over a century ago.
