O, Lovely Peace, 1875. Artist: Joseph Swain
O, Lovely Peace, 1875. Bismarck plays a penny whistle and the Russian Bear dances. The German Emperor dances along happily. This relates to a visit made in May 1875 by the Emperor of Russia to his German counterpart. There were some grounds for concern at recent reports coming out of France. These concerned the faint possibility that France was preparing to launch another war. The rumours were taken seriously enough to promote the English Government to remonstrate with France whilst personal intervention was planned during the meeting between Russia and Germany. From Punch, or the London Charivari, May 22, 1875
