Reiner Gemma Frisius, Dutch astronomer, geographer, cartographer and mathematician, 1539
Reiner Gemma Frisius, Dutch astronomer, geographer, cartographer and mathematician, 1539. Gemma Frisius (1508-1555) holding an adjustable ring dial for determining the altitude of the Sun for calendar calculations. He was the first to propose the use of triangulation as a method for locating places and for mapping, and also suggested using portable chronometers to calculate longitude by means of elapsed time. From Cosmographia by Peter Apian. (Antwerp, 1539)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Reiner Gemma Frisius, a renowned Dutch astronomer, geographer, cartographer, and mathematician. The photograph captures Gemma Frisius holding an adjustable ring dial used for determining the altitude of the Sun in calendar calculations. This innovative device exemplifies his forward-thinking approach to scientific exploration during the 16th century. Gemma Frisius was not only a pioneer in map-making but also proposed the use of triangulation as a method for locating places and mapping them accurately. His contributions extended beyond geography into astronomy and navigation as well. He suggested using portable chronometers to calculate longitude by measuring elapsed time - an idea that would revolutionize maritime travel. The engraving is taken from "Cosmographia" by Peter Apian, published in Antwerp in 1539. It beautifully captures Gemma Frisius' dedication to his profession while highlighting his significant impact on various scientific fields. As we admire this image, we are reminded of Gemma Frisius' invaluable contributions to mathematics and science during the Renaissance period. His work laid the foundation for future advancements in cartography, astronomy, and navigation techniques that continue to shape our understanding of the world today.
