EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the formidable figure of John Howard, first Duke of Norfolk, circa 1850. Known as Jack of Norfolk, this nobleman held the esteemed position of Earl Marshal of England during the tumultuous year of 1483. However, his life was tragically cut short when he met his demise on the battlefield while fighting alongside Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field on August 22nd, 1485. The image exudes a sense of medieval grandeur and nobility as it immortalizes this valiant soldier and knight from England's rich history. With his stoic expression and regal attire, John Howard stands as a symbol of loyalty to both king and country. This wood engraving transports us back to the fifteenth century, capturing an era marked by political strife between two powerful houses - Lancaster and York - in their quest for control over England's throne. The Wars of Roses reached its climax with the Battle of Bosworth Field, where John Howard fought valiantly until his last breath. Preserved through time by Ann Ronan Pictures in this nineteenth-century print collector's piece, John Howard's legacy lives on.
