Resident of South Coast Tower narrowly escapes death as storm destroys residence at Eastbourne
Resident of South Coast Tower narrowly escapes death as storm destroys residence at Eastbourne.
Mr F Turvey, who has been living in the Martello tower, at Eastbourne, Sussex, one of the forts built in 1805 to repel a Napoleonic invasion, narrowly escaped death, when a terrible storm battered the building, splitting it from top to bottom. Hearing a cracking noise at the height of the storm, Mr F Turvey rose to investigate the trouble and a shower of debris fell all around him. He made a dash for the door of the fort and managed to escape just as the tower split in two amid falling masonry.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness the harrowing escape of a resident from the South Coast Tower as a devastating storm wreaks havoc on their residence in Eastbourne. Mr F Turvey, a brave survivor who had been residing in the historic Martello tower built to defend against Napoleon's invasion in 1805, narrowly cheated death when nature unleashed its fury upon him. As the tempest raged outside, an ominous cracking sound pierced through the chaos, alerting Mr Turvey to imminent danger. With remarkable courage and agility, he sprang into action and rushed towards the source of trouble. Debris cascaded around him like deadly confetti as he made his desperate dash for safety. Just moments before catastrophe struck, Mr Turvey managed to reach the fort's door and flee its crumbling structure. The sheer force of Mother Nature tore through the tower from top to bottom, leaving it split in two amidst a shower of falling masonry. This poignant image captures Mr Turvey standing beside an enormous crack that now scars what was once his home within Eastbourne's Martello Tower after surviving this terrifying ordeal on February 26th, 1933. Preserved in black and white monochrome tones characteristic of early twentieth-century photography, this Europeana photograph serves as a powerful reminder of human resilience amidst natural calamities that can strike at any moment.
