Sydney Payne packing for export. Like many of the Penguin Books staff, he has been with the firm since its early days. The original warehouse and packing room was in the crypt of Holy Trinity Church, Euston Road, and stock was brought in by a chute from the graveyard above. In 1937 the firm moved to its modern building at Harmondsworth, facing the entrance to London Airport.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we see Sydney Payne diligently packing books for export. As one of the longstanding members of Penguin Books staff, he has been an integral part of the company since its early days. The photograph provides a glimpse into the history and evolution of Penguin Books' operations. Initially, their warehouse and packing room were located in the crypt of Holy Trinity Church on Euston Road. Interestingly, stock was transported to this unconventional space through a chute from the graveyard above. However, as time went on and Penguin Books grew in prominence, they relocated to a more modern facility in Harmondsworth. Situated near London Airport's entrance, this new building became their headquarters in 1937. The image showcases not only Sydney Payne's dedication but also highlights the bustling nature of book distribution during that era. Stacks upon stacks of books fill up the warehouse as employees like Sydney work tirelessly to ensure timely deliveries across various destinations. This snapshot captures an important moment in publishing history - a testament to Penguin Books' commitment to providing quality literature worldwide. It serves as a reminder of how far they have come from their humble beginnings while honoring those who played pivotal roles within the company's growth and success.
