Walnut tree trunk

Walnut tree trunk. Cross-section of the trunk of a walnut tree (Juglans regia), showing its different rings. On the outside is the cork, which exhibits the characteristic pattern of cork layers that are laid down at angles to one another. The cork is an external, secondary tissue impermeable to water and gases and protects the wood beneath. The wood is divided into an outer layer of sapwood (living wood in a growing tree) and a central layer of dead wood (heartwood) that is impregnated with tannins and resins. Tannins and resins deter fungi, bacteria and insects, and so make it resistant to decay. Walnut is one of the finest woods for cabinet makers because of its beautiful grain

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty and complexity of a walnut tree trunk. The cross-section reveals a mesmerizing display of different rings, each representing a distinct stage in the tree's growth. At first glance, one is immediately drawn to the outermost layer - the cork. Its unique pattern, formed by layers laid down at various angles, serves as both an aesthetic marvel and a protective shield for the wood beneath. Moving inward, we encounter two crucial components: sapwood and heartwood. The outer layer of sapwood represents living tissue responsible for transporting water and nutrients throughout the growing tree. In contrast, the central layer of heartwood consists of dead wood impregnated with tannins and resins. These natural compounds act as formidable deterrents against decay-causing fungi, bacteria, and insects. The walnut's internal structure exemplifies its resilience in nature while also making it highly sought after by cabinet makers due to its exquisite grain patterns. This remarkable botanical specimen stands as a testament to Mother Nature's ingenuity in creating materials that are not only visually stunning but also possess exceptional durability. Through this photograph from Science Photo Library, we gain insight into the fascinating world of plant biology – where every ring tells a story about growth cycles, protection mechanisms, and structural integrity found within trees like Juglans regia (walnut).
