Jupiter with moons and their shadows
Jupiter and its moons, infrared Hubble Space Telescope image. This image shows a rare alignment, in which two moons are visible on the face of Jupiter, and the shadows of three fall across it as well. The white dot just above centre is Io, and Ios shadow is directly to its left. The blue dot at upper right is Ganymede, whose shadow is directly left of it on the left limb. At upper right is the shadow of Callisto. Callisto itself is out of frame at right. This image was taken by the Near Infrared Camera and Multi Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) on the HST on 28th March 2004

EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking print captures a rare celestial alignment, showcasing the majestic planet Jupiter adorned with its moons and their ethereal shadows. Taken by the Near Infrared Camera and Multi Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) on the Hubble Space Telescope in 2004, this image offers a mesmerizing glimpse into our vast solar system. In this stunning composition, two of Jupiter's moons grace its face while three distinct shadows fall gracefully across its surface. The white dot just above the center is Io, accompanied by its shadow to the left. At the upper right corner, we find Ganymede represented as a captivating blue dot, with its shadow elegantly positioned to its left on Jupiter's limb. Lastly, Callisto's shadow can be seen at upper right. The circular arrangement of these celestial bodies creates an awe-inspiring spectacle that reminds us of the intricate dance occurring within our cosmic neighborhood. This photograph not only showcases the beauty and grandeur of Jupiter but also highlights how celestial events such as eclipses shape our understanding of space. As we gaze upon this extraordinary image captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of humanity's insatiable curiosity about what lies beyond Earth's boundaries. It serves as a testament to both scientific exploration and artistic appreciation for the wonders that exist in our universe.
