Edgar Frisby, US astronomer

Edgar Frisby (1837-1927), US astronomer. Frisby was born in England, but graduated from the University of Toronto in 1863. He taught in both Canada and the USA, and from 1868 worked as assistant astronomer at the US Naval Observatory in Washington DC. By 1878, he had attained a full US Navy professorship of mathematics. He observed the total solar eclipse of 11 January 1880 in California, and calculated the orbit of the Great Comet of 1882. Frisby retired in 1899. This photograph, from the period 1905 to 1945, is from the Harris and Ewing Collection, which mostly consists of photographs taken in Washington DC, USA
