EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print showcases a rectangular counter card advertising the iconic Navy Cut Medium tobacco from 1928. Against a vibrant green background, the focal point of the image is a tin of Medium tobacco that protrudes approximately 20mm from the card. The text on the card boldly states "Handy for the Pocket // and // Ready for the Pipe // TWO OUNCE // POCKET TINS // 2/1 each. // JOHN PLAYER & SONS, NOTTINGHAM" emphasizing its convenience and quality. On the reverse side of this historical artifact, we find practical features such as a support to allow it to stand upright and a hanging loop for display purposes. Adding an intriguing touch to this piece's backstory is a faded handwritten note which reads "Mr A Doughty // Approved // 1-3-28". This personal endorsement suggests that Mr Doughty was impressed by this product over nine decades ago. Furthermore, there is evidence of official approval with a rubber stamp bearing handwritten amendments from TRADE MARKS DEPT I T CO LTD dated February 24th, 1928. It confirms its authorized use in Great Britain and Northern Ireland exclusively. This print not only captures an era when advertising was more tangible but also offers us glimpses into Nottingham's rich history as well as John Player & Sons' legacy in producing fine tobacco products.
