EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures a unique advertising piece from the 1920s, showcasing the iconic Navy Cut Medium Cigarettes by Players. The pull-forward counter card is ingeniously designed to resemble a narrow wedge when fully extended. At its center, we see the bearded head and shoulders of a sailor proudly representing HMS INVINCIBLE, while below him sits a box of 50 Navy Cut cigarettes. The text on his hat band boldly reads "HMS INVINCIBLE" adding an air of authenticity and authority to this maritime-themed advertisement. Prominently displayed on the card are the words "THE NEW FLAT // POCKET TIN // 50 FOR 2/6 // Players Please" enticing potential customers with both convenience and affordability. Flipping over to the reverse side, we find handwritten notes indicating that this particular card was produced in 1926-7 with a quantity of 20 units. A label reveals that MARDONS, specialists in window novelties and showcards based in Bristol and London, were responsible for creating these eye-catching pieces. This image not only showcases Nottingham's rich history as an advertising hub but also offers us a glimpse into early twentieth-century marketing strategies. It serves as a testament to John Player & Sons' innovative approach towards promoting their tobacco products through creative visuals tied to themes such as sailing and sports like football
