EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving showcases two exquisite birds from the European and African continents: the Subalpine Warbler (Sylvia cantillans, male) and the Thick-billed Grasswren (Amytornis textilis). The Subalpine Warbler is a small, migratory songbird native to the mountains of Europe and Asia. Known for its distinctive black mask and yellow underparts, this male specimen displays its vibrant plumage in all its glory. In contrast, the Thick-billed Grasswren, native to the arid regions of Southern Africa, is a ground-dwelling bird with a unique appearance. The male, depicted here, boasts a thick, black bill and a cryptic, brown and grey body, perfect for blending into its grassy habitat. This beautiful illustration is from the "Dictionnaire de la Nature: Ornithologie" (Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology) by Dumont de Sainte-Croix, published in Paris, France between 1816 and 1830. The illustration was painted by Jean Gabriel Pretre, a skilled painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was executed by Massard, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The intricate details and lifelike quality of this engraving are a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship and dedication of the artists and engravers involved. This historical piece not only showcases the beauty of these birds but also preserves their images for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
