The painting showcases two subspecies of the Piopio, or New Zealand Pipit, a native bird species endemic to New Zealand. The South Island Piopio (Turnagra capensis) is depicted on the left, while the North Island Piopio (Turnagra tanagra) is illustrated on the right.
