EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant black-and-white photograph, Roger Bushell, a man of refined sophistication and intelligence, is captured in a moment of respite from the tumultuous events that were to unfold in his life. The image, dated July 1935, depicts Bushell attending a society dance with Miss Durrell Sale-Barker. At the time, Bushell was pursuing a successful legal career, but his fate was about to take a dramatic turn. With the outbreak of World War II, Bushell answered the call to duty and joined the Royal Air Force (RAF). Tragically, in 1940, he was shot down during a bombing mission over Germany. Bushell's captivity began when he was taken prisoner of war and interned at Stalag Luft III, a German prison camp located in Sagan. Determined to escape, Bushell became the mastermind behind one of the most daring and intricately planned escapes in military history. Known as the Great Escape, this attempt involved the construction of three tunnels, codenamed Tom, Dick, and Harry. The plan was executed in March 1944, and 76 Allied prisoners managed to escape, including Bushell. Despite the success of the operation, Bushell was recaptured just three weeks later, and he was ultimately sent to a punishment camp, where he was brutally murdered on September 17, 1944. This photograph, taken years before his heroic actions, serves as a poignant reminder of the man behind the legend – a man who, even in the face of adversity, continued to embody grace, intelligence, and determination.
