EDITORS COMMENTS
Pericles Argyropoulos: A Prominent Greek Statesman of the 19th Century This evocative portrait captures the distinguished visage of Pericles Argyropoulos (1809-1861), a renowned Greek statesman who played a pivotal role in shaping the political landscape of his country during a tumultuous period in its history. Born in the Ionian Islands, which were then under Venetian rule, Argyropoulos was educated in Italy before embarking on a career in law and politics. In the 1830s, Argyropoulos became involved in the Greek War of Independence, advocating for the cause of Greek self-determination and independence from the Ottoman Empire. After the successful outcome of the war, Argyropoulos served as a member of the first Greek Constituent Assembly and helped draft the country's first constitution. He went on to hold numerous high-ranking positions in the Greek government, including Minister of Foreign Affairs and Prime Minister. Despite his many accomplishments, Argyropoulos' tenure as Prime Minister was marked by political instability and economic hardship. He was forced to resign in 1854, but continued to serve as a respected advisor and diplomat until his death in 1861. This photograph, taken in the latter half of the 19th century, offers a glimpse into the life of a man who dedicated himself to the cause of Greek independence and democracy. Argyropoulos' legacy continues to be celebrated in Greece as an exemplar of statesmanship and commitment to the greater good.
