EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, a group of dedicated nurses and a medical officer pose outside Quex House in Birchington, Kent, in early 1915. The scene depicts the Nurses of the Birchington Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD), alongside their Medical Officer, Dr Harry Worthington. Seated from left to right are Alice Cobb, Quartermaster, Hannah Powell-Cotton, Commandant, and Mary Holmes, Lady Superintendent. Standing to the right of the Commandant is Nurse Fanny Watson. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914, during the height of World War I, and remained operational until 31 January 1919. This hospital, run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment, was an essential contribution to the war effort, providing care for wounded soldiers returning from the front lines. The Commandant of the Birchington VAD was Hannah Powell-Cotton, wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton, the founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum located at Quex Park. Hannah's leadership and dedication were crucial in managing the day-to-day operations of the hospital. Mary Holmes, the Lady Superintendent, and Alice Cobb, the Quartermaster, also played vital roles in ensuring the smooth running of the facility. Dr Harry Worthington, the Medical Officer, oversaw the medical care provided to the patients, working closely with the nursing staff to ensure their wellbeing. In this photograph, the group exudes a sense of unity and determination, reflecting the important work being carried out at the Quex Park VAD Hospital during those challenging times.
