EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Giarre and Stanghi for Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World" published in Florence in 1847, provides a fascinating glimpse into the traditional dwelling of the Sami or Lapp fishermen of Lapland. The image depicts a section through the circular, dome-shaped house, revealing its central hearth as the focal point of the interior. The Sami people, also known as Lapps, are an indigenous Finno-Ugric ethnic group originating from the northernmost parts of Europe, including Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. Historically, they were skilled hunters, herders, and fishermen, adapting to the harsh Arctic climate and living in harmony with nature. The dome-shaped houses, or 'lavvus,' were designed to withstand the extreme weather conditions, featuring a conical roof made of turf, wood, or birch bark. The central hearth, shown here, was the heart of the home, providing warmth, light, and a place for cooking and socializing. The smoke from the fire would escape through a hole at the top of the dome, allowing for proper ventilation. The intricate details of the engraving show the Sami people's connection to their environment and their ingenious solutions for surviving in the challenging Arctic climate. The image also highlights the rich cultural heritage of the Sami people, which continues to be celebrated and preserved to this day.
