EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the Sand Sedge, Carex arenaria, a common sedge found in sandy habitats throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. The Sand Sedge is a small, clumping perennial herb, characterized by its slender, triangular stems and narrow, linear leaves. The plant's inflorescence consists of spikelets arranged in dense, compact clusters, with each spikelet containing both male and female flowers. The Sand Sedge has a long history of medicinal use, particularly in traditional European herbalism. It was believed to have diuretic properties and was used to treat various ailments, including kidney stones, gout, and edema. The plant was also used topically to treat wounds and skin irritations. This beautiful engraving is taken from Dr. Willibald Artus' Hand-Atlas sammtlicher mediinisch-pharmaceutischer Gewachse, or Handbook of all medical-pharmaceutical plants, published in Jena, Germany, in 1876. The Hand-Atlas was a comprehensive botanical work that aimed to provide accurate and detailed illustrations of medicinal plants for use by medical professionals and students. The engraving's intricate details and vibrant colors faithfully capture the Sand Sedge's delicate beauty and intricate structure, making it a valuable addition to any botanical or medical collection.
