EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph showcases Mezzo-soprano Rosine Stoltz in the role of Zaida from Gaetano Donizetti's opera "Dom Sebastien" (1843), at Theatre de l'Opéra in Paris. The image, taken from Victor Dollet's illustration in Alexandre Noël's "Galerie Dramatique: Costumes des Theatres de Paris" (1845), provides a glimpse into the elaborate theatrical world of the 19th century. Rosine Stoltz (1815-1897) was a renowned French opera singer, celebrated for her powerful and expressive mezzo-soprano voice. In this production of "Dom Sebastien," she brought the character of Zaida to life, enchanting audiences with her vocal prowess and dramatic acting. The opera, composed by Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848), is based on the historical figure of King Sebastian of Portugal, who was assassinated in 1578. The opera's second act features Zaida, a Moorish princess, who falls in love with the titular character, Dom Sebastien. In this scene, Zaida is shown in her exotic, richly-decorated costume, surrounded by her Moorish attendants. The intricately detailed lithograph, created by Victor Dollet (1805-1883) and Louis Lasalle, captures the essence of the theatrical production, with its vibrant colours and meticulous attention to detail. The image offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of 19th-century opera, showcasing the opulence, drama, and beauty that defined this art form during the period.
