EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking 17th-century copperplate engraving, Holy Roman Emperor Conrad II, also known as Conrad the Elder, Conrad the Salic, or Conradus II Salic, is depicted in regal splendor. Born in 990, Conrad was a member of the Salian Dynasty and the Duke of Bavaria before his election as Holy Roman Emperor in 1027. He succeeded Emperor Henry II, also known as Henry the Black or Henricus Niger, who was the last representative of the Saxon Dynasty. Conrad II is shown here wearing the imperial insignia, including the imperial crown and the imperial orb and scepter. The background is adorned with classical motifs, including the Caesars and Kaisers, symbolizing the continuity of the Roman imperial tradition. The engraving is taken from "De Roomsche Monarchy," a work by Francois Salma published in Utrecht in 1697, and was produced by the renowned engraver Abraham Bogaerts. Conrad II's reign was marked by military campaigns against the Magyars, Slavs, and Poles, as well as efforts to strengthen the imperial administration and promote peace within the empire. He is also remembered for his piety and patronage of the Church, including the foundation of the monastery of Prüm. Conrad II died in 1039 and was succeeded by his son, Henry III. This impressive engraving provides a glimpse into the grandeur and power of the Holy Roman Emperor during the Middle Ages.
