EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the GLC-LFB (Greater London Council-London Fire Brigade) Croydon vehicle workshops in the 1960s. The GLC-LFB was formed on 1 April 1965, and as part of the enlargement of the London Fire Brigade, a series of photos was commissioned to document each location, including the Croydon Fire Brigade's workshops located at the headquarters station in Old Town, Croydon. In the image, we see several fire appliances and vehicles lined up in the well-lit shed, ready for maintenance and repair. The workshop exudes a sense of industry and efficiency, with firefighters and mechanics working diligently to ensure the fleet was in top condition. The vehicles, adorned with the GLC-LFB insignia, are a testament to the importance of a well-equipped and reliable fire service. The Croydon Fire Brigade had a rich history, with its origins dating back to 1865. The Old Town headquarters station, where the workshops were located, had been in operation since 1885. The shed in the photograph reflects the modernization of the fire service during the 1960s, as the GLC-LFB sought to provide the best possible response to the people of London. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, providing a valuable record of the Croydon Fire Brigade's vehicle workshops during the 1960s, a time of significant change and growth for the London Fire Brigade.
