EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Lady Elcho (Lady Violet Catherine Manners, later Lady Elcho, born 1888) with her two young sons, the Hon. Francis David Charteris (b. 1912) and the Hon. Martin Michael Charles Charteris (b. 1913), during the aftermath of World War I. Lady Elcho was the second daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Rutland, and her husband, Captain Hugo Francis Charteris, Lord Elcho (1887-1916), was the eldest son of the Earl of Wemyss. At the time this image was taken, Lord Elcho held a commission with the Gloucestershire Yeomanry. Tragically, he was killed in action on 23 April 1916. Lady Elcho's elder sister, Lady Diana Manners (Lady Diana Cooper, 1892-1986), was a renowned socialite and the subject of numerous biographies. The photograph captures the tender moment between mother and sons, as they pose in a sunlit room, surrounded by ornate furnishings and decorative objects, reflecting the opulence and elegance of the upper class during the early 20th century. Francis Charteris later succeeded his grandfather as the 12th Earl of Wemyss. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by families during the Great War and the enduring bond between a mother and her children.
