1753 1824 Jacques Regis Cambaceres Parme
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking portrait, Jean-Jacques-Regis de Cambaceres, Duke of Parma (1753-1824), is depicted in the height of French imperial grandeur. Born in Corsica, Cambaceres rose through the ranks of the French political scene to become a prominent statesman and Archchancellor of the Empire under Napoleon Bonaparte. Cambaceres' impressive career began in the late 18th century when he served as a military officer during the French Revolution. He later became a member of the Council of Five Hundred, the lower house of the French legislative assembly, and was appointed as a minister under the Consulate. In 1804, Cambaceres was made a duke and a peer of France by Napoleon, who recognized his loyalty and political acumen. As Archchancellor of the Empire, Cambaceres played a crucial role in the governance of the French Empire. He was responsible for drafting and implementing many of Napoleon's laws, including the Napoleonic Code, which remains a foundational legal document in France and other civil law jurisdictions around the world. Despite his close association with Napoleon, Cambaceres survived the fall of the empire and continued to serve in various capacities under the Bourbon monarchy that succeeded it. He was a skilled diplomat and negotiator, and played a key role in the Congress of Vienna, which re-established the European balance of power after the Napoleonic Wars. This portrait captures the essence of Cambaceres' political prowess and his status as a prominent figure in French history. With his piercing gaze and impeccably dressed in the robes of the Archchancellor, Cambaceres exudes an air of authority and sophistication that belies the complex political landscape of his time. The portrait is a testament to his enduring legacy as a statesman and a shaper of modern France.
