Association Football Newcastle Players Soccer Teams Winners Winning

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the jubilant Newcastle United team as they lifted the FA Cup in 1910, marking a significant moment in the club's storied history. The FA Cup, the most prestigious domestic football competition in England, had eluded Newcastle United for over two decades. But on April 23, 1910, at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, the Magpies finally claimed victory, defeating Barnsley Football Club 2-0. The image is taken from a rare set of Association Football Players Cigarette cards, produced in the 1930s. These collectible cards, which featured famous footballers of the era, were often given away with packs of cigarettes. This particular set includes 52 cards, each featuring a photograph of a player from a different team, along with their name and position. In this photograph, the Newcastle United players are seen standing proudly in their blue and white striped shirts, holding aloft the coveted FA Cup. The team's captain, Jimmy Smith, is in the center, wearing the armband and clutching the trophy. Surrounding him are his teammates, each with expressions of joy and triumph. The team's manager, Billy McIlduff, stands behind them, beaming with pride. This photograph is not only a testament to Newcastle United's footballing prowess but also a snapshot of a bygone era in English football. The 1910 FA Cup Final was played over 110 minutes, with two 45-minute halves and 30 minutes of extra time if necessary. The teams played in leather footballs, which were heavier and harder than modern balls, and matches were often played in front of large crowds in open-air stadiums. Despite the passage of time, this photograph continues to evoke a sense of nostalgia and wonder, reminding us of the rich history and traditions of English football.
