1961 Affair Alice Duchess Gloucester Profumo Scandal Sixities Stephen Ward
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this black-and-white sketch, we find Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, as rendered by the skilled hand of Stephen Ward in 1961. The Duchess, born Alice Christabel Montagu-Douglas-Scott in 1901, was the youngest daughter of the 6th Duke of Buccleuch and the Countess of Buccleuch. She married the Duke of Gloucester, the third son of King George V, in 1935. The portrait was created during a sitting granted specifically to Ward by the Duchess for the Illustrated London News. At the time, Ward was a renowned British artist, known for his evocative and expressive sketches of high-profile figures. His work graced the pages of the Illustrated London News throughout 1961, with the Duchess of Gloucester being one of his esteemed subjects. Two years later, Ward would become notorious for his involvement in the Profumo Affair, a political and social scandal that shook the British establishment. The affair, which began in 1961, involved Ward introducing the Secretary of State for War, John Profumo, to Christine Keeler, a model who was also involved with Soviet naval attaché, Yevgeny Ivanov. The ensuing scandal led to the resignation of Profumo and significant damage to the reputations of several prominent figures. Despite the dark turn Ward's life would take, this portrait of the Duchess of Gloucester remains a testament to his artistic talent and the Duchess's regal presence. The 1960s, an era of change and upheaval, are captured in this image, offering a glimpse into a bygone era of British royalty and society.
