1583 1652 Churchman Denis Jesuit Theologian
EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the scholarly intensity of Denis Petau, a prominent French Jesuit churchman, theologian, and chronologer of the 17th century. Born in 1583, Petau dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge and the advancement of the Catholic Church. His extensive contributions to the fields of history and chronology earned him the esteemed title of Petavius. Petau's scholarly pursuits began in earnest at the College de Clermont in Paris, where he joined the Society of Jesus in 1602. He went on to study at the prestigious College de La Flèche, where he honed his skills in theology, philosophy, and mathematics. Petau's academic prowess soon caught the attention of his superiors, and he was sent to Rome to continue his studies at the Gregorian University. Upon his return to France, Petau became a professor of theology at the College de Clermont. However, his true passion lay in the study of history and chronology. He spent years researching and compiling data from a wide range of sources, including ancient texts and the works of his contemporaries. Petau's most notable works include "Apology for the Chronology of the Old Testament" and "Chronologiae Sacrae Pars Universa," which revolutionized the way scholars approached the study of biblical chronology. Despite his many accomplishments, Petau's life was not without controversy. His unorthodox views on certain theological issues drew the ire of some within the Church hierarchy. However, Petau's scholarly reputation remained unblemished, and he continued to be revered as a leading light in the fields of history and chronology. Petau passed away in 1652, leaving behind a rich legacy of knowledge and discovery. This portrait, taken in the latter half of his life, captures the deep concentration and intellectual curiosity that defined his remarkable career.
