1577 1680 1769 Comet Comets Cornelius Observations Phenomena Space Sturm Gemma Messier

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases three of the earliest recorded observations of comets in human history: the comets of 1577, 1680, and 1769. The top image, depicting the comet of 1577, is based on an engraving by Cornelius Gemma. This comet, also known as Halley's Comet, was last seen in the night sky in 1531 and was not expected to return until 1682. However, its unexpected appearance in 1577 caused great excitement among astronomers and the general public. The middle image represents the comet of 1680, also known as the Great Comet of 1680. This comet, depicted in this print based on an engraving by Sturm, was one of the brightest comets ever recorded and was visible to the naked eye for several months. Its appearance coincided with the publication of Johannes Kepler's book "Astronomia Nova," which contained his laws of planetary motion. The bottom image illustrates the comet of 1769, also known as the Great Comet of 1769 or the Comet Halley. This comet, based on an engraving by Messier, was the first comet to be discovered using a telescope. Its discovery by Charles Messier led to the creation of the Messier Catalogue, a list of 110 deep-sky objects that is still widely used by astronomers today. These three comets, each depicted in stunning detail in this print, represent some of the most significant moments in the history of comet observation and our understanding of the universe. Their appearances captivated the imaginations of people around the world and contributed to the advancement of astronomical knowledge.
