EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the bustling streets of Westminster, London on a crisp autumn day. The year is 1937, and John Maltby's skilled lens captures the grandeur of Odeon Leicester Square BB87_03577. This iconic cinema stands proudly amidst its surroundings, with its steel-framed structure and polished black granite exterior gleaming under the sunlight. A significant piece of history unfolds within this frame as we learn that this very spot was once occupied by the Alhambra, which met its demise in 1936. However, from its ashes rose the Odeon chains flagship theater - a testament to progress and innovation. Maltby's keen eye for detail allows us to appreciate not only the architectural beauty but also offers a glimpse into an era when construction work was celebrated rather than hurriedly overlooked. The oblique angle chosen by Maltby adds depth to the photograph, emphasizing both height and scale. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, it becomes evident that Maltby had an affinity for documenting England's rich heritage through his lens. His collection includes numerous other Odeons across various locations – each capturing a unique moment in history.
