View of West Lake, 1700s. Creator: Ike Taiga (Japanese, 1723-1776)
View of West Lake, 1700s. West Lake near Hangzhou, China, was a place favored by the Korean and Japanese elite, even though they had never been there. West Lake is legendary for famous Chinese poets: Tang poet Bai Juyi (772-846) and Song scholar Su Shi (1037-1101) lived in its vicinity, and the Song poet Lin Bu (967-1028) led a reclusive life, having cranes and plum blossoms as his only companions on Solitary Hill near the lake. Landscape paintings of West Lake gained in popularity in Japan as early as the Muromachi period. In the Edo period, Ike Taiga, a founding literati painter, challenged himself to depict West Lake in hanging scroll format by transforming an image from a 1633 Chinese woodblock print, Tianxia mingshan tu (Famous Mountains in China) for this work

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of West Lake in the 1700s, as envisioned by the talented Japanese artist Ike Taiga. Known for its allure and legendary status among Chinese poets, West Lake near Hangzhou, China, became a favored destination for Korean and Japanese elites despite never having set foot there. The lake's enchantment is palpable through the brushstrokes of Taiga's painting. Drawing inspiration from a 1633 Chinese woodblock print titled "Tianxia mingshan tu" (Famous Mountains in China), Taiga masterfully transforms this image into a hanging scroll format. Using ink and light color on paper, he skillfully captures the essence of West Lake's picturesque landscape. During Japan's Edo period, landscape paintings depicting West Lake gained immense popularity. As one of the founding literati painters during this time, Ike Taiga took up the challenge to recreate its splendor on canvas. His rendition transports viewers to an idyllic realm where nature reigns supreme. This remarkable artwork not only pays homage to renowned Chinese poets who resided near West Lake but also exemplifies Taiga's artistic prowess and deep appreciation for natural beauty. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art as part of their heritage collection, this exquisite piece serves as a testament to cultural exchange between Japan and China during that era.
