EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu, titled "A Teenage Boy and Girl with a Viewer for an Optique Picture (Nozoki-karakuri); Kobo Daishis Poem on the Jewel River of Koya (Koya no Tamagawa: Kobo Daishi), ca. 1788" takes us back to the vibrant world of 18th-century Japan. The artist's mastery in ukiyo-e, a popular art form during the Edo period, is evident in this polychrome masterpiece. In this scene, we see two teenagers engrossed in their exploration of an optical toy known as Nozoki-karakuri. With wide-eyed curiosity, they peer through a convex lens attached to Dutch glasses or Oranda megane, marveling at the three-dimensional effect it creates. Their youthful enthusiasm is palpable as they immerse themselves in this novel experience. The setting transports us to a serene countryside location near the Jewel River of Koya. It is believed that these young individuals are viewing a poetic composition by Kōbō Daishi or Kukai, one of Japan's most revered Buddhist monks and scholars. The delicate ink and color on paper bring life to every detail - from the intricate patterns adorning their garments to the lush landscape surrounding them. Preserved within The Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection, this artwork stands as a testament to Suzuki Harunobu's artistic brilliance and his contribution to Japanese heritage art.
