EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the profound moment of St Francis receiving the stigmata, a divine manifestation of Christ's wounds. Painted by Francesco Francia in the late 15th to early 16th century, this artwork showcases his exceptional talent and devotion to religious themes. St Francis, originally known as Giovanni Bernadone, was a wealthy Italian merchant who renounced his material possessions to follow a life dedicated to serving God and helping those in need. He founded both the Franciscan order and the Poor Clares, two orders committed to assisting the poor and sick. In this painting, St Francis is depicted kneeling in prayer within a cave-like setting. The artist skillfully portrays him wearing traditional monastic clothing while experiencing an ecstatic connection with God. The vibrant colors used by Francia bring depth and intensity to this miraculous scene. The historical significance of St Francis cannot be overstated; he was canonized in 1228 for his unwavering faith and selfless acts of compassion. This particular artwork offers viewers a glimpse into one of the most pivotal moments in St Francis' life – when he received these sacred marks that symbolize his deep spiritual union with Christ. Francesco Francia's masterful portrayal not only captures this extraordinary event but also serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of St Francis' teachings on love, humility, and service that continue to inspire people around the world today.
