A Sop to Cerberus, 1872. Artist: Joseph Swain
A Sop to Cerberus, 1872. This cartoon shows Louis Adolphe Thiers, the first president of the Third Republic, and Leon Gambetta, the deputy for Marseilles. Here they are threatened by Cerberus, which, in Greek mythology, was the three-headed dog guarding the entrance to Hades. The heads represent Legitimist, Imperial and Orleanist, which groups, with the Red Republicans, were warring continually and causing Frances administration great problems. This cartoon relates to a speech given by M Thiers on 18th December in which he said he had fought all his life against Socialism and Demagogy. He called for a Vote of Confidence. The vote was carried by 267 to 117. From Punch, or the London Charivari, December 21, 1872

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "A Sop to Cerberus, 1872" showcases the artistic brilliance of Joseph Swain. The cartoon depicts a significant political event in France during the 19th century. In the image, we see Louis Adolphe Thiers, the first president of the Third Republic, and Leon Gambetta, the deputy for Marseilles, standing together while being threatened by Cerberus. Cerberus symbolizes the constant turmoil faced by France's administration due to various warring factions: Legitimist, Imperial, Orleanist, and Red Republicans. These groups caused immense challenges for Thiers' government. The three heads of Cerberus represent these conflicting ideologies that plagued French politics at that time. The inspiration behind this cartoon was a speech delivered by M. Thiers on December 18th. He expressed his lifelong fight against Socialism and Demagogy while calling for a Vote of Confidence from his fellow countrymen. Ultimately, this vote was carried with a majority of 267 to 117. Through this thought-provoking artwork captured in monochrome black and white tones by John Tenniel and Joseph Swain's engravings technique; we are transported back to an era where political struggles were fierce battles fought within mythical realms like Hades itself. This historical print serves as a testament to the enduring power of art in capturing pivotal moments in history and shedding light on complex political landscapes.
