Soapey Samuel Kisses the Rod, 1858

Soapey Samuel Kisses the Rod, 1858. Samuel Wilberforce, Bishop of Oxford, was a reformer of the Church of England who dragged his priests into greater spirituality and efficiency. Wilberforce arranged conferences for his rural deans, travelled widely and increased the number of his parishes to be served by resident incumbents. Wilberforce had been suspected of countenancing auricular confession, although he denied this. However, his sympathy with Tractarian principles led to him being accused of a similar sympathy with Catholicism. Mr Punch is seen here in the role of schoolmaster chastising a truculent Wilberforce. Punch was firmly opposed to any ascendancy of the Catholic cause, and this opposition featured regularly in the journals cartoons. From Punch, or the London Charivari, October 16, 1858

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that captures a significant moment in the life of Samuel Wilberforce, Bishop of Oxford. Known as a reformer of the Church of England, Wilberforce was dedicated to bringing spirituality and efficiency to his priests. In this image, we see Mr Punch taking on the role of a schoolmaster, chastising an evidently defiant Wilberforce. Wilberforce's commitment to his cause led him to arrange conferences for rural deans and expand the number of parishes served by resident incumbents. However, he faced accusations of sympathizing with Tractarian principles and Catholicism due to his association with auricular confession. It is interesting to note that Mr Punch represents opposition against any rise in Catholic influence. The engraving beautifully portrays this historical scene from October 16th, 1858. The composition showcases Wilberforce kneeling before Mr Punch at a desk adorned with papers and other items associated with education. The image conveys both authority and admonishment as Mr Punch wields a rod while wearing a traditional mortarboard hat. This heritage image provides us with insight into religious politics during the 19th century. It serves as a reminder of how individuals like Samuel Wilberforce navigated their roles within society while facing scrutiny for their beliefs and actions.
