Scipio Africanus, Roman general

Scipio Africanus, Roman general. Publius Cornelius Africanus Scipio (236-183 BC) fought in the Second Punic War against Hannibal and the Carthaginians. As a young military tribune he survived the disastrous defeat at Cannae (216 BC). Ten years later he drove the Carthaginians out of Spain, and in 202 BC, decisively defeated Hannibal at the Battle of Zama, bringing the war to an end and earning himself the name Africanus. Intrigues by political enemies forced Scipio to withdraw from public life, and he ended his life a virtual exile

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed Roman general, Scipio Africanus. Publius Cornelius Africanus Scipio, known for his remarkable military prowess, played a pivotal role in the Second Punic War against Hannibal and the Carthaginians. Despite surviving the devastating defeat at Cannae as a young military tribune, Scipio's determination and strategic brilliance propelled him to later drive out the Carthaginians from Spain. In 202 BC, Scipio achieved an extraordinary victory at the Battle of Zama, decisively defeating Hannibal and ultimately bringing an end to the war. This triumph earned him the illustrious name "Africanus" symbolizing his exceptional achievements on this battlefield. However, political intrigues orchestrated by his enemies forced Scipio into seclusion from public life. He spent his remaining years as a virtual exile but left behind an indelible legacy as one of Rome's greatest war heroes. The print captures a stunning sculpture bust of Scipio Africanus in vibrant color. The intricate details etched onto marble showcase not only his physical features but also reflect his commanding presence and unwavering determination. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back to ancient Rome—a time when great men like Scipio shaped history through their bravery and leadership.
