Queen Hermione, 1865 Artist: John Tenniel
Queen Hermione, 1865. Britannia as Paulina unveils the statue and remarks Tis Time! Descend; Be Stone No More! On behalf of the nation Britannia draws back the curtain and reveals Queen Victoria as a statue, frozen in time, and commands her to be stone no more. This is a line from Shakespeares A Winters Tale, Act V, Scene 3. For some four years, Queen Victoria had maintained a life of absolute retirement from public life following the untimely death of her beloved Prince Albert. Here, Punch expresses the view that it is now time for Her Majesty to re-enter the world. In A Winters Tale Queen Hermione disappears in the third act and does not reappear until the last scene. From Punch, or the London Charivari, September 23, 1865

Queen Hermione, 1865 - A Symbolic Unveiling of Queen Victoria's Return to the World
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print by renowned artist John Tenniel, we witness a powerful allegorical moment that marks the end of an era. The scene depicts Britannia as Paulina, gracefully drawing back a majestic curtain to reveal Queen Victoria frozen in time as a statue. With her sceptre and regal orb in hand, Britannia commands the queen to awaken from her self-imposed seclusion with the resolute words, "Tis Time! Descend; Be Stone No More!". This poignant image captures a significant period in British history when Queen Victoria withdrew from public life following the tragic loss of her beloved Prince Albert. For four long years, she remained hidden away from society's gaze. However, Punch magazine expresses through this artwork that it is now time for Her Majesty to re-emerge and resume her role as leader. Drawing inspiration from Shakespeare's play "A Winter's Tale" where Queen Hermione similarly disappears only to return triumphantly at its conclusion, this print symbolizes hope and renewal. It serves as a call for Queen Victoria to shed her stone-like state and once again take center stage on behalf of the nation. As we delve into this monochrome engraving capturing 19th-century Britain's sentiments towards their sovereign ruler, we are reminded of both Tenniel's artistic brilliance and his ability to convey complex emotions through visual storytelling. This heritage image partnership between creator John Tenniel himself alongside figures like William Shakespeare pays homage not only to historical events but also speaks volumes about resilience and strength during challenging times.
