Papers! Papers! Papers!, 1864. Artist: John Tenniel

Papers! Papers! Papers!, 1864. John Russell says: Please, My Lord, Them Toris Would Be Much Obleeged for Papers. Lord Palmerston replies: Papers! Haven t They Got The Standard and the Herald. What More Papers Can They Want? This cartoon depicts the little footman, Russell, asking the master of the house, Palmerston, if he can give the papers to the Tories (represented by Disraeli lurking outside the door). Palmerston asks why they want more papers as they already have the Herald and the Standard. The Standard in particular was a very firm supporter of the Conservative Party. At the time the very confusing Schleswig-Holstein issue came to prominence, Lord Russell was Foreign Secretary. Russells poor handling of the situation had caused fierce attacks to be made against in the House by Disraeli and other members of the opposition. From Punch, or the London Charivari, 1864

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Papers! Papers! Papers!" by John Tenniel, we are transported back to the year 1864, a time of political turmoil and intrigue. The image showcases an animated conversation between Lord Palmerston, the Prime Minister of Britain at that time, and his footman, John Russell. The cartoon humorously depicts Russell pleading with his lordship to provide papers for the Tories, symbolized by Benjamin Disraeli lurking outside. However, Lord Palmerston questions their need for more papers as they already have access to influential newspapers like The Standard and The Herald. It is worth noting that The Standard strongly supported the Conservative Party during this period. This artwork was created against the backdrop of the Schleswig-Holstein issue which had caused great confusion in international affairs. Lord Russell's mishandling of this situation had led to severe criticism from Disraeli and other opposition members in Parliament. Through Tenniel's skillful caricature and satire, he captures not only the political tensions but also highlights key figures such as Lord Palmerston and Benjamin Disraeli. This engraving serves as a testament to Tenniel's talent in capturing significant moments in history through art. With its monochrome black-and-white style, this portrait transports us back to 19th-century Britain where politics played out on newspaper pages and within aristocratic circles. It offers us a glimpse into a fascinating era filled with power struggles, espionage-like activities, and debates over treaties such as the Treaty of Vienna. Overall, "Papers! Papers! Papers!" is an evocative piece that encapsulates both historical events and timeless human nature – our insatiable desire for information amidst political gamesmanship.
